From Crown to Gown Photoshoot with Designer Sanida Xiong

Heyyy there,

I wanted to share something cool I worked on!

In December 2020, I was asked by my friend Sanida Xiong, who is a creator of many things to photograph and document her entry piece through video for the “From Crown to Gown” challenge by Collective Vision Fashion.

The challenge for Sanida’s piece was to transform the traditional purple Hmong headdress (phuam txoom suab) into a sexy, elegant, ready-to-wear gown using the main colors: purple, black, and white.

Sanida not only executed the theme with her amazing talent, but also took risks as you can clearly see.

To shoot Sanida’s gown, I held the intention to capture her final piece and showcase it in the best light. I chose the setting of a grand stage set for big shows and events with all its spotlights and glam to set the ambiance for this shoot. I wanted full glamour, bright, soft lights and Hollywood to come through.

I placed the model on my hand painted canvas and set the lighting to highlight her sleek hair, elegant body, and beautiful face. I also chose fashion poses that flattered the dress and its special features such as the high thigh slit, sheer design, and intricate paj ntaub.

The photoshoot was planned and executed three days before the deadline. After hours of post-production, the final video and photos were sent it off on New Year’s Eve to the judging committee.

With complete joy, Sanida took first place! Look out for her next projects, and enjoy these final photos for the challenge!

Much love,

Pa Chia Xiong
